Love Promise Stories from Schulte Subaru

Subaru and Schulte Subaru believe in making a positive impact on the communities in which we live and work. We uphold that belief through our Love Promise Community Commitment. Every month, we select inspiring stories from customers and partners from around our area who strive to support our collective commitment and feature them here.

Helping Sioux Falls Grow Greener

At Schulte Subaru, we believe caring for our community also means caring for the environment we all share. During Subaru Loves the Earth month, we partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation to help make Sioux Falls a little greener by giving away 100 free trees to members of our community. From River Birch to Allegheny Serviceberry, customers and community members stopped by throughout the event excited to bring new life to their yards, neighborhoods, and local green spaces. What started as a simple tree giveaway quickly became something more meaningful. Families shared stories about where they planned to plant their trees, children helped carry saplings to vehicles, and our team had the opportunity to connect with people who care deeply about the future of our environment. The response from the community was incredible, and all 100 trees were reserved quickly. Seeing so many people eager to plant roots and invest in a healthier future reminded us how small actions can create lasting impact. At Schulte Subaru, being more than a car dealer means showing up for the community in ways that go beyond the showroom. We are proud to support initiatives that help keep Sioux Falls beautiful for future generations and grateful to partner with organizations like the Arbor Day Foundation that share that same commitment. #SubaruLovesTheEarth #SubaruLovePromise #DrivenToServe #SchulteSubaru #SiouxFalls #ArborDayFoundation

Community Pond Cleanup

At Schulte Subaru, caring for our community sometimes starts in unexpected ways. One Saturday afternoon, our sales team noticed a mama duck and her ducklings waddling through our parking lot. Wanting to make sure they made it safely, the team helped guide them across the lot and toward the pond near our dealership. Once they reached the pond, our team noticed something upsetting. Because the pond sits near several busy businesses, including Aldi and Walmart, the area had become filled with garbage and plastic bags both in and around the water. What should have been a safe home for wildlife had become polluted and neglected. That moment sparked action. During Subaru Loves the Earth month, members of our team came together for a pond cleanup day to help restore the area and make the ducks' home a little cleaner and safer. Armed with gloves, garbage bags, and a shared commitment to doing good in our community, the team spent time removing trash and helping improve the environment right here in Sioux Falls. At Schulte Subaru, we believe being More Than a Car Dealer means taking care of the places and creatures that share our community too. Sometimes making a difference starts with simply paying attention and choosing to help. #SubaruLovesTheEarth #CleanupTheEarth #DrivenToServe #CommunityMatters #MoreThanACarDealer

Schulte Subaru - Always There to Save the Day

Let me start by saying, I LOVE MY Subaru Outback! Having a reliable and safe car allows me to live my life on my own terms, traveling A LOT to visit family and friends who are spread throughout the country. As a woman who travels alone, it is important that I feel safe in my car and know that there is someone to call when things go wrong. After a recent trip, my car's check engine light came on just as I pulled into my driveway! My first thought was, "Thank goodness I am home," followed immediately by, "I hope this isn't something major." My first stop was the auto parts store to get a diagnostic scan. The scan gave me an answer, but it didn't make much sense to me. So my next call was to my cousin, Jeremy Griffith, at Schulte Subaru. Jeremy talked with the service team and came back to report that it was a coolant sensor issue, something they had already fixed three times just that day. I felt relieved that it was a known issue and probably something covered by my warranty. However, this presented us with a new problem... I couldn't drive my car to the dealership to get it fixed. The nearest Subaru dealership is 2.5 hours from where I live, and Schulte is 5 hours away. Jeremy quickly talked with the service manager, Travis Johnson, and without hesitation, I was told they would drive down with a trailer and a loaner vehicle to pick up my car. I was blown away! I was prepared to have to find someone with a trailer to tow my car to a dealership somewhere. But within an hour, the Schulte team had called to confirm they would pick it up within the next week. My car was fixed quickly, and I was reminded that I had some scheduled maintenance that was needed. All the items were things another dealership had previously suggested. Not knowing a lot about cars, I am always hesitant about whether what is suggested is really required. I felt confident that I could trust Travis' team and not worry that I was being taken advantage of. The entire Schulte team was excellent! Byron, who picked up my car, was friendly, and I felt confident he would get my car safely back to the dealership. My service advisor, Taylor Mennenga, was great at communicating that my car had arrived safely, giving me updates on my service, and helping me coordinate picking up my car on a Saturday when the service department was closed. I appreciate Travis and his service team for keeping me safe and making sure my car was ready for another 80,000 miles. And though Jeremy is my cousin, I know he treats every customer with the same care and kindness that he showed me. I don't care how far I live from the dealership, I will always buy my vehicles from Schulte Subaru. Thank you Schulte Subaru and Subaru for keeping me safe to go on that next adventure!

Reuniting Pets

There's a kind of silence that settles into a home when a pet goes missing. It's the absence of something deeply loved. In 2025, we met so many people who knew that silence all too well. They came to SFAHS for help and the hope of reunification. What they carried with them were stories of loss. Stories of doors opened for just a moment too long, of pets who slipped away, and of the heartbreak that followed. Again and again, we heard the same utterance: "I never want to go through that again." Because of the Subaru Loves Pets initiative, we were able to provide a sense of relief. Through a $4,000 grant, Subaru made it possible for us to host a free microchip clinic for our community. What typically serves around 100 pets became something much greater. With the support of Schulte Subaru, more than 300 pets came through our drive-in clinic in just one day. Each microchip represented a family choosing protection, choosing peace of mind, choosing a better chance at being reunited if the unthinkable happens. While a microchip is small and simple, what it offers is immeasurable....the possibility of coming home. We are grateful every day for Subaru's support of our mission. Their partnership doesn't just help us provide a service; it helps us protect the bond between people and their pets. And in a world where we've seen just how quickly that bond can be disrupted, that kind of support means everything.

Car Seat Training and Check Event

Schulte Subaru was an excellent partner for our recent car seat technician training course and community car seat check event. Holding a 4-day technician training course in January in South Dakota can be a challenge without indoor space. Schulte Subaru came through for us! They provided us with classroom learning space as well as an indoor heated garage for our hands on practice. We were also able to use the indoor heated service area for the community event. That was the perfect space to have parents and caregivers join us as our new technicians practiced their skills. It was so easy and comfortable for everyone involved! Because of this training and the partnership with Schulte Subaru, we now have 8 more certified car seat technicians spread across eastern SD, from Beresford to Aberdeen. This certification class also featured a valued partnership between Sanford Health and Sioux Falls Fire Rescue, as the instructors came from both organizations. All of the communication before and during the training was seamless. The Subaru staff was kind and generous in sharing their work space, time and resources. A special shout out to Preston for being such a great host and communicator and to Jason for graciously giving up his office space while we had classes. We look forward to working with Schulte Subaru again in the future. You are making a difference in many SD communities. Thank you!

Sharing Love Beyond Our Showroom: A Valentine's Surprise for Centerville Care & Rehab

At Schulte Subaru, our Love Promise is more than a slogan. It is a commitment to actively look for opportunities to serve, uplift, and care for the communities that support us every day. Sometimes, those opportunities are planned months in advance. Other times, they show up unexpectedly and simply require someone willing to say, "Let's do something about this." The day before Valentine's Day, one of our office team members, Bri, walked into the marketing office with an idea that perfectly embodied the spirit of the Love Promise. She had seen a Facebook post from Centerville Care & Rehab featuring residents holding handmade signs with their names and a simple, heartfelt requests for Valentines. It was a reminder that while Valentine's Day often focuses on grand gestures, what many people truly want is connection and to be seen, remembered, and cared for. Bri immediately recognized an opportunity for Schulte Subaru to step in and share that connection. Without hesitation, we began organizing a special Valentine's card drop-off for the residents. In less than 24 hours, we gathered and prepared over 20 personalized Valentine's cards for the residents of Centerville Care & Rehab. As we reviewed the resident list, we noticed something extra special: two residents were celebrating birthdays on Valentine's Day. We knew we couldn't let that go unnoticed. In addition to the Valentine's cards, we included two birthday cards to ensure those residents felt doubly celebrated on their special day, and we had all our employees sign both cards! The following day, we coordinated a drop-off for me at the care center. Moments like these remind us that meaningful community support doesn't always require large-scale events or major sponsorships. Sometimes, it simply requires attention, compassion, and a willingness to respond. This Valentine's Day initiative is a reflection of how our staff strives to operate every day — not just as a car dealership, but as a neighbor. We believe being "More Than a Car Dealer" means showing up for moments big and small. It means recognizing that community impact is built through consistent acts of kindness. We are proud of Bri for bringing this opportunity forward and proud of our team for jumping in to make it happen. Together, we were able to turn a simple idea into a post promoting love of one's community and a tangible expression support!

The Subaru Love Promise: Safety, Care, and Family

Late Monday evening (6:30pm) , I received a message from one of our Schulte Subaru customers. His voice was calm, but I could tell the night had been difficult—he’d hit a deer with his Crosstrek, the same one he had proudly purchased just a few months earlier in May. The car was totaled, but his first words weren’t about the damage. They were about gratitude. He was certain his Subaru had done its job, keeping both him and his passenger safe. Even though he was an hour and a half from home, I immediately offered to come pick him up. Thankfully, his wife was nearby and able to bring them home safely. The next morning—bright and early at 745a.m.—he walked through our doors, tired but thankful to be standing there. Despite some credit challenges, our team came together to make sure he didn’t have to go without the safety and peace of mind he trusted. By the end of the day, he was back on the road in a beautiful Subaru Legacy—grateful, emotional, and reminded why he chose Subaru in the first place. Moments like these are why we do what we do. At Schulte Subaru, it’s more than just selling cars—it’s about caring for people like family, through every twist, turn, and unexpected moment on the road.

Schulte Subaru - A Ray of Sunshine for Cancer Patients

June 18th was a stormy day, but the warmth and compassion delivered by the Schulte Subaru team to the patients of Sanford Children’s Hospital was like a ray of sunshine breaking through the clouds. The hospital staff was grateful for the smiles the Subaru team brought to their patients’ faces with the gifts of soft blankets, sweet patient care kits and messages of hope. But the kindness of the team was just as much of a gift, keeping the boxes sealed to give the children the opportunity to open them. It is obvious that the Schulte Subaru staff is passionate about this partnership! One employee commented, “We always talk about helping others find the right car and getting people and families to where they need to go safely — but seeing these kids reminds you that this is what it’s about… getting to do events like these and give back. Their fight makes our daily struggles feel so small.” The Subaru team felt incredible gratitude for this year’s event since it was the first time they were able to visit patients and their families to give them the blankets directly. Preston Eisenmenger of Schulte Subaru shared, “The smiles, laughter, and courage that Suttyn and Myles shared with our employees brought light into the room and made the visits go very smoothly. There was a sense of gratitude and connection that everyone—our team, the families, and the hospital staff—could feel.” Subaru of America and retailers across the country have been supporting blood cancer patients over the past 10 years in partnership with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) through the Subaru Loves to Care Initiative. This partnership has blessed over 350,000 patients in that time and impacted even more through the example Subaru sets as a true community partner to those in need. And Schulte Subaru is the epitome of a great community partner, having been a reliable partner to LLS and the community for years! LLS Upper Plains Executive Director, Kortney Hamm shares her appreciation for our Subaru and healthcare partners, “Our partnership with Subaru continues to provide hope, community, comfort, and support to cancer patients in our communities. We couldn’t be more grateful for the continued engagement from our local hospital partnerships and the Subaru teams in showing how we can rally for patients we serve.” And Schulte Subaru’s message to patients is “You are seen. You are Strong. You are Supported. Our entire team stands with you, cheering you on through every step. We hope these small gestures remind you that there is a community rooting for you, believing in your strength, and sending love your way.”

Love Promise in Action

I received a call from Mike Miller regarding a customer who was experiencing car trouble. The vehicle was a hybrid, which can be a challenge due to their complex systems, so Mike asked if I could assist. When I arrived at the church parking lot, I met a woman with two young children. She was accompanied by another woman and a gentleman—one of our loyal Subaru customers who had purchased several vehicles from us. He was the one who had called Schulte Subaru, knowing we strive to help when and where we can. The woman in need wasn’t a customer, just someone going through a tough moment. Her hybrid wouldn’t start. I attempted a jump start, checked a few things under the hood, and even referred to the owner’s manual to troubleshoot the hybrid system. After nearly 40 minutes, I suspected it was a major issue with the hybrid battery or main fuse—something I couldn’t resolve in a parking lot. I recommended a tow, which she arranged. The tow truck driver also had no luck starting the vehicle, so they prepped it to be taken to a repair facility. As the others left, the woman became increasingly distressed. She had just moved to town from North Carolina, didn’t know many people, and now faced the stress of a broken-down vehicle, two young children with her, and another child who needed to be picked up from an after-school activity. Without hesitation, I offered her a ride home. During the drive, she shared more of her story, including her worry about picking up her son. I told her not to worry—we were already out, and I’d take all of them home. It was the least I could do. The next day, I was surprised to receive a call at the dealership—unusual in my role. It was the same woman, calling specifically to thank me and share that her vehicle had been diagnosed with a failed hybrid battery. The cost of repair far exceeded the car’s value and her budget. She said she trusted me and asked for guidance on what to do next. I listened. She didn’t need a hard sell—she needed someone she could trust. I brought Jeremy into the conversation to see what options might exist financially, and he was confident we could help. We then connected her with Kurt, one of our Subaru consultants, who’s known for being honest, calm, and low-pressure—exactly what she needed. With Jeremy’s help working the numbers and Kurt’s reassuring presence, she chose a 2021 Subaru that fit her needs perfectly. A couple of weeks later, I saw her again—this time back at the dealership with one of her children, waiting to get the windows tinted on her new car. They strolled through the dog park, visited the snack bar, and checked out the outdoor play area. I didn’t get a chance to speak with her that day, but I noticed something important: she looked more at peace. Happier. Settled. This wasn’t just a car sale. It was a moment where we got to live out what the Subaru Love Promise truly means. Jeremy, Kurt, and I each played a part in helping someone find stability in a difficult moment—and that’s what makes the work we do worth every bit of effort.

Schulte Subaru Supports Children's Home Shelter for Family Safety - Sioux Falls, SD

Imagine having to go without a coat, shoes, or even socks. For millions of children and adults experiencing homelessness and other urgent need situations across the country, even here in Sioux Falls, this can be a harsh reality. Helping others is the key to a strong community which is why Schulte Subaru believes in helping to support individuals and families in urgent need. This season, for our Subaru Loves to Help® initiative, we are partnering with Operation Warm®, a national nonprofit focused on connecting children with the resources they need to thrive. Through this partnership and other historical Subaru Loves to Help efforts, Subaru and retailers like us will have helped nearly 900,000 children and adults in urgent need so far. On 1/22/25, Schulte Subarupartnered with Children's Home Shelter for Family Safety and donated 120 coats to children in urgent need. These essential items not only help keep children protected, warm, and dry, it can have a significant impact on a child’s mental and emotional well-being.

Above and beyond

This past Friday (3/14/25), my wife and I were travelling from the middle of MN to Sioux Falls to hear the SDSO St. Patrick's Day concert. During the evening of running around, the dash on our '19 Forester lit up like a Christmas tree, 250 miles from home. We stopped at an O'Reilly's and asked them to attach their scan tool. A "too lien" error was present and the canned solution was to replace the ECM. Friday night. Weekend. Away from home. Back to work on Monday. I could see that the Schulte Subaro service department was closed on Saturday, but I went anyway, hoping someone would tell me "ya, you're OK to drive home, just get it checked then". Sales person Mike Weber greeted me and asked what I needed. I explained. He grimaced - the shop was closed, no techs present. We chatted some more, and Mike brought me over to to Ethan Munson, their sales manager, for more guidance. He looked at the scan tool print out and was puzzled by such a strange error. He asked to bring the car into the shop, and he took a quick look. As it turned out, a hose had a massive air leak - a hose that they learned, after general manager Jason Hanson opened up the parts room, was not in stock. Now what? "Hey, there's a loaner Forester over there. Let's take its OEM hose and put it on his car, test drive it to make sure it's working, clear the codes, send him on his way, oh, and let's not charge him anything either." Making a profit is important to keep the doors open, but making lasting customers is the long game. They did not need to do this, but they wanted to, and we appreciated it very much. Thank you Mike Weber, Ethan Munson, and Jason Hanson!

Schulte Subaru Keeps the Community Warm

The bitter cold can be particularly harsh for people experiencing homelessness. Last year, the Bishop Dudley Hospitality House and Center for Families Served over 2,000 unhoused individuals, including men, women, families and children. Whether it is walking to work, picking up the kids from school, or taking the bus across town for healthcare, the Bishop Dudley Hospitality House guests often have to face the cold. Thanks to Schulte Subaru and their customers, our guests do not have to face the cold without proper protection. Coats and warm winter gear were donated and distributed to guests at a much needed time, A big thank you to Schulte Subaru and their customers for giving back to their community.

Subaru's gift of warm to Hawthorne.

Hawthorne Elementary extends its sincere appreciation to Schulte Subaru for their commitment and generosity. Their ongoing collection of children's coats has provided our students with the essential gift of warmth and comfort throughout the winter season. With the support of their staff, customers, and community members, many students have experienced a season filled with kindness and care.

Subaru Loves to Help - Sioux Falls edition

Children's Home Shelter for Family Safety is a 24-hour emergency domestic violence shelter. We serve victims of domestic violence and child abuse or neglect. Many of the children and families we serve come to our facility with very few of their own things. Meeting the basic needs of our guests is a BIG task, but it's one that is made easier by friends like Schulte Subaru. We received a healthy supply of children's coats and we are incredibly grateful for the support received from Subaru and Operation Warm. Thank you!

Schulte Subaru Employees Rally Around Teammate

At Schulte Subaru, our team is more than coworkers- we're family. When Jazzy, a valued service team member, was seriously injured in a car accident on her way to work and faced months off work, her Schulte Subaru family stepped up in a big way. Employees from every department came together to raise an incredible $6500 to support Jazzy during her recovery. Their generosity showcased the deep care and camaraderie that defines our workplace. "Jazzy has always been there for us; now its our turn to be there for her," shared one teammate. Overwhelmed by the suppoer, Jazzy expressed her gratitude: "It means the world to know I have such amazing people in my corner" Moments like these remind all of us that at Schulte Subaru, we're not just a team--we're family!

Customer service above and beyond

I was scheduled to have the rock chip coating put on my car the 5th of Nov. Then my Grandmother was put in the hospital on hospice that weekend and I had many things to deal with relating to her care. I called my salesman, Ethan Sachen, to let him know I was going to have to reschedule. As I work 5 days a week and live almost 3 hrs away, this is not easy! He immediately offered to have someone come and pick up my car from my home town, bring me a loaner and take the car to Sioux Falls for the scheduled work. I was very impressed with their customer service department. They kept me informed on the status of my car and even sent me a card offering sympathy for my situation. This was very much appreciated! Thank you, Tina
